Education Loan Guide
Complete guide to education financing, 80E tax benefit, and moratorium impact
Section 80E Tax Benefit
Education loan interest is 100% deductible under Section 80E — with no upper limit. Available for 8 years from start of repayment. Applies to higher education loans for self, spouse, children, or legal guardian ward.
Moratorium Trap
During moratorium, interest accrues and is capitalised (added to principal). A ₹10L loan at 9% for 2-year moratorium inflates to ₹11.88L before EMI even starts — 18.8% higher principal.
Govt Subsidy Schemes
- Central Sector Scheme: Full interest subsidy for income <₹4.5L/yr during moratorium
- SBI Scholar: Special rates for IIT/IIM students
- Girl Student: 0.5% rate concession
Repayment vs Prepayment
Education loans have no prepayment penalty. Pay extra EMI using increment/bonus to save significant interest. Partial prepayment in first 2-3 years saves maximum interest due to front-loaded interest structure.

Education Loan Pro Tips
Expert strategies to minimise education loan burden
Always Prefer Government Banks
SBI, BOB, PNB offer 8-9.5% vs 12-16% from NBFCs. On ₹20L loan for 10 years, the difference is ₹10-15L extra interest for NBFCs. Government banks take longer to process but save lakhs.
Old Regime > New Regime for 80E
Section 80E deduction on education loan interest is ONLY available under the Old Tax Regime. If your interest is ₹1L+/year and you're in 30% bracket — that's ₹30,000 tax saving annually.
Avoid Moratorium — Pay During Course
Moratorium sounds attractive but capitalised interest is brutal. ₹10L @ 9% for 2 years of moratorium = ₹1.88L extra added to principal. Better: pay at least simple interest during course years.
Prepay in First 3 Years
Education loan EMI is front-loaded with interest. In Year 1-3, most of your EMI goes to interest. Extra prepayment in this period drastically reduces total interest paid and shortens tenure.
