Everything you need to know about Systematic Withdrawal Plans
What is SWP?
A Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) lets you withdraw a fixed amount from your mutual fund corpus every month. Unlike FD interest, it's tax-efficient โ only the gains portion is taxed, not the principal. Your remaining corpus continues to grow at market returns.
What is Step-Up SWP?
A Step-Up SWP automatically increases your monthly withdrawal by a fixed percentage every year โ typically 5โ7% to match inflation. In Year 1 you withdraw โน20,000/month, in Year 2 โน21,000, Year 3 โน22,050 โ maintaining your real purchasing power throughout retirement.
The SWP Formula
SWP vs FD Interest
- SWP: Only gains taxed (12.5% LTCG after 1yr) โ far more efficient
- FD: Entire interest taxed at slab rate (up to 30%)
- SWP: Principal + gains can be withdrawn
- SWP: Corpus continues to grow tax-efficiently
- FD: Fixed rate, no market upside participation
Build Your Corpus
Accumulate via SIP during working years. Target 25โ30ร annual expenses.
Choose a Hybrid Fund
Balanced Advantage or Equity Savings fund โ stable yet growth-oriented.
Set Up SWP
Choose withdrawal date (1stโ5th), amount, and step-up % on platform.
Annual Review
Rebalance portfolio, adjust step-up if needed, keep emergency buffer.
SWP Taxation Guide
FY 2025โ26 ยท FIFO applies ยท Far more efficient than FD
FIFO โ Old Units Redeemed First
When you start SWP, the oldest units (held longest) are redeemed first. If your SIP was running for 3+ years, almost all SWP redemptions will qualify as LTCG (12.5%), not STCG.
Principal is Tax-Free
Only the profit (gain) portion of each SWP instalment is taxed. If you invested โน50L and it grew to โน80L, only the โน30L gain is taxable โ spread across many years of SWP.
Harvest โน1.25L LTCG Exemption Yearly
Structure your SWP so annual gains redeemed stay under โน1.25L/year โ then you pay ZERO LTCG tax. For larger SWPs, book profits in April each year to utilise the exemption.
Gain portion: ~โน0.8L (first few yrs)
Exempt: โน1.25L
Tax: โน0 (zero!)
Effective tax rate: 0%
Fully taxable at slab
30% slab: Tax = โน1.05L/yr
Tax: โน1.05L/year
Over 20yr: โน21L+ extra tax
Step-Up SWP Pro Tips
Expert strategies to make your corpus last a lifetime
Match Step-Up to Inflation, Not Salary
Unlike SIP (where you step up by salary hike %), SWP step-up should match India's CPI inflation of 5โ7%. Going higher erodes corpus faster; going lower reduces your real purchasing power over time. Start at 5โ6% and review annually.
Bucket Strategy โ Split Your Corpus
Divide corpus into 3 buckets: Bucket 1 (2yr expenses in liquid funds โ don't touch during markets), Bucket 2 (5yr in hybrid funds), Bucket 3 (rest in equity). This ensures you never sell equity in a bear market to fund withdrawals.
Pause SWP During Market Crashes
The biggest risk to SWP is Sequence of Returns Risk โ withdrawing during a bear market permanently destroys corpus. When markets fall 20%+, switch SWP from equity to Bucket 1 (liquid fund) for 3โ6 months. Resume when markets recover.
Optimal SWP Date: 5th of the Month
Set SWP date between 1st and 7th. Avoid month-end โ NAV can be volatile near dividend/bonus dates. The 5th gives enough time for the credit to reflect in your bank account by 8thโ10th. Set autopay on the 1st for bill payments after SWP credit.
Rebalance Annually โ Not Just SWP Amount
Every April, check your equity:debt ratio. If equity rallied 30%, your 50:50 ratio may be 65:35 now. Book equity profits (tax-efficient up to โน1.25L), move to debt, rebalance back. This "buy low, sell high" automated discipline compounds your corpus significantly.
Never Draw Down 100% โ Leave 30% as Legacy
Plan your SWP to exhaust only 70% of corpus over your retirement horizon. The remaining 30% acts as: (a) buffer if you live longer than expected, (b) healthcare emergency fund in later years, (c) legacy for family. Add term insurance if corpus is below โน50L.
