FD Complete Guide
Everything about Fixed Deposits in India
What is an FD?
A Fixed Deposit (FD) is a financial instrument where you deposit a lump sum with a bank for a fixed period at a pre-agreed interest rate. Unlike savings accounts, FDs offer higher interest with guaranteed returns regardless of market conditions.
Compounding in FD
Most Indian banks compound interest quarterly. Monthly compounding gives slightly more returns. The formula: A = P × (1 + r/n)^(nt) where n = compounding frequency per year. Quarterly compounding slightly increases the effective annual rate.
Types of FDs in India
- Regular FD: Standard deposit, fully taxable interest
- Tax-Saver FD: 5yr lock-in, ₹1.5L deduction under 80C
- Senior Citizen FD: Extra 0.25–0.5% rate benefit
- Corporate FD: Higher rates, higher risk than bank FDs
- NRE/NRO FD: For non-resident Indians, NRE is tax-free
FD vs Mutual Funds
- FD Returns: 6.5–9.5% (guaranteed, fixed)
- MF Returns: 10–15% (market-linked, not guaranteed)
- FD Tax: Full interest taxed at slab rate
- MF Tax: LTCG 12.5% only on gains (equity)
- FD: Best for capital protection, near-term goals

FD Taxation
Understand TDS and tax impact on FD returns
Submit Form 15G / 15H
If your total income is below taxable limit, submit Form 15G (below 60) or 15H (senior citizen) at start of year — bank won't deduct TDS
Spread FDs Across Banks
Each bank applies TDS threshold separately. ₹40K limit per bank — spread ₹10L across 3 banks to stay under threshold per bank
Tax-Saver FD for 80C
If you need FD + tax saving, use Tax-Saver FD. ₹1.5L investment saves up to ₹46,800 in tax (30% bracket). 5-year lock-in applies.
FD Pro Tips
Maximize your Fixed Deposit returns
FD Laddering Strategy
Instead of one 5-year FD, create multiple FDs maturing each year (1yr, 2yr, 3yr, 4yr, 5yr). This ensures annual liquidity and lets you reinvest at higher rates if interest rates rise.
Book FD at Year-End When Rates Peak
Banks often raise FD rates in Q4 (Jan–Mar) to meet deposit targets. Monitor rates and book during this window to lock in higher rates for longer tenures.
Stay Within ₹5L DICGC Limit per Bank
DICGC insures only ₹5L per depositor per bank. For large amounts, spread across multiple banks to ensure full insurance coverage even if a bank fails.
Small Finance Banks for Higher Rates
Small Finance Banks (Jana, AU, ESAF, Suryoday) offer 8.5–9.5% FD rates vs 7–7.5% from large banks. They're RBI-regulated and DICGC-covered up to ₹5L.
Submit 15G/15H Before April 1st
Submit Form 15G (below 60) or Form 15H (senior citizens) at the start of each financial year. This prevents TDS deduction if your total income is below taxable threshold.
Cumulative vs Non-Cumulative FD
Cumulative: Interest compounded and paid at maturity — ideal for wealth building. Non-cumulative: Monthly/quarterly interest payout — ideal for regular income retirees who don't need SWP.
