Senior Citizen Pro Tips
Maximise income and tax efficiency in retirement
Maximize SCSS First — Highest Guaranteed Return for Seniors
SCSS at 8.2% is the best guaranteed return available exclusively to senior citizens. Invest the maximum ₹30L per person (₹60L for couple jointly). At ₹30L: SCSS pays ₹20,500 quarterly or ₹6,150/month equivalent. This forms the guaranteed income floor of your retirement.
Claim 80TTB ₹50,000 Interest Deduction Every Year
Section 80TTB lets senior citizens deduct up to ₹50,000 of interest income annually under Old Tax Regime. This applies to SCSS interest, FD interest, and savings account interest combined. At 30% slab, this saves ₹15,600/year. Always declare under Old Tax Regime if interest income is significant.
Keep 30–40% in Balanced MF SWP for Inflation Protection
SCSS and FD provide guaranteed income but no protection against inflation. Over 20 years, 6% inflation halves purchasing power. Keeping 30–40% of corpus in a balanced mutual fund with SWP provides inflation-beating potential while maintaining regular monthly income.
