Everything you need to know about Systematic Investment Plans
Definition
A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) lets you invest a fixed amount into a mutual fund at regular intervals — usually monthly. Rather than timing the market, you invest consistently regardless of market conditions, benefiting from rupee-cost averaging and the power of compounding.
How SIP Works
On your chosen date each month, your bank auto-debits the SIP amount and purchases mutual fund units at the current NAV. When markets are low, you get more units; when high, fewer. This averaging effect lowers your effective purchase cost over time.
The SIP Formula
Why SIP Beats Lumpsum
- No need to time the market — invest every month
- Rupee cost averaging reduces per-unit cost
- Builds financial discipline and habit
- Compounding works best over long horizons
- Small amounts grow into significant wealth

SIP Taxation Guide
FY 2025–26 · Budget 2024 updated rates
FIFO Rule Applies
When you redeem, the first purchased units are sold first. Each instalment has its own holding period from its investment date — not the SIP start date.
12-Month Rule for Equity
If a SIP instalment is held for more than 12 months before redemption, those gains become LTCG at 12.5% (above ₹1.25L exemption). Held ≤ 12 months = STCG at 20%.
₹1.25L Annual Exemption (Budget 2024)
Your LTCG from all equity investments combined is exempt up to ₹1.25 Lakh per financial year. Only gains above this threshold are taxed at 12.5% with no indexation.
Pro Tips
Expert strategies to maximise your SIP returns
Start Small, Increase Annually (Step-Up)
Even a 10% annual step-up on ₹5,000/month creates 2.3× more wealth than a flat SIP over 20 years. Align your SIP increase with your salary hike — most platforms automate this.
Choose SIP Date Wisely
Set your SIP date 3–5 days after your salary credit date. The 1st and 5th of the month see lower AMC congestion. Avoid month-end dates (28–31) — some months are shorter and may cause failed transactions.
Never Stop SIP During Market Crashes
Market crashes are your SIP's best friend. Lower NAV = more units purchased for the same amount. Every market correction in history has been followed by new highs. Stopping a SIP during a crash locks in losses.
Diversify Across Fund Categories
Don't put all SIP eggs in one basket. Spread across Large Cap (stability), Mid Cap (growth), and Flexi Cap (best of both). Add ELSS if under old tax regime for 80C benefits.
Harvest LTCG Exemption Every Year
You get ₹1.25 Lakh in LTCG tax-free every financial year. If your equity portfolio gains exceed this, strategically redeem and re-invest to reset your cost basis — a practice called "tax-loss harvesting." Zero tax if done right.
Reinvest Dividends — Use Growth Option
Always choose the Growth option (not IDCW/Dividend) for your SIP. In the IDCW option, dividends are paid out and taxed at slab rate. In Growth, everything compounds tax-free until you redeem.
